Why Healing Art?
Art can help boost confidence and alleviate anxiety, depression, and stress.
Our nurses have long felt that our consult and treatment rooms are clinical and unwelcoming, lacking any positive reflection of our community.
We know that art can help boost confidence and alleviate anxiety, depression, and stress. An article published in Health Environments Research & Design Journal quantified how much Cleveland Clinic’s contemporary art collection—an eclectic mix of 6,200-plus pieces displayed throughout the health system’s public spaces and patient areas—improved patient mood, stress, and comfort.
“This wasn’t a clinical study, but rather a survey of art’s general impact on patient experience,” says Jennifer Finkel, PhD, one of two full-time Cleveland Clinic Art Program curators. “And patient experience contributes to patients’ well-being and health outcomes.”
Project Launched
Pihanga Health is proud to have launched a “Healing Art” project featuring art from upcoming local artists from Tūrangi and the Southern Lakes communities.
Criteria and Voting
The criteria for artists creating Healing Art are to creatively express Pihanga Health and our local community, create a peaceful and healing atmosphere, distract from stress, and encourage freedom and expression. Healing art should also incorporate living elements that evoke positivity and optimism and be diverse and colourful.
We are asking the community to view the artwork and then vote on the pieces that inspire you the most.
The winning submissions will be printed on EZ dot vinyl and displayed on the walls or ceilings of our treatment rooms and reception area.
Voting Closes 20 September 2024

"This piece shows Pihanga and the Tongariro River. I wanted to represent Tūrangi's beautiful natural environment. The fabric used is all recycled from old clothing and leftover scraps. Some fabric was hand-dyed by me."

Nature + Nurture
"I've used watercolor and pen to depict native flora, fauna, fungi, ruru (morepork), and our local maunga. I find peace in our surroundings. When life is hectic or overwhelming, the beauty of nature always helps ground, connect, and take us outside of ourselves."

Woven
"is a collagraph, inspired by the 'Knowledge Baskets' legend. I have chosen to represent 2 of the 3 legendary kete.
Te kete-aronui which held all the knowledge that could help mankind, and
Te kete-tuauri which held the knowledge of ritual, memory and prayer.
I have not included te kete-tuatea which contained knowledge of evil or makutu, which was harmful to mankind."

Heather uses Linocut, also known as relief printmaking, to create these playful hand pressed printed images. Linocut is a process whereby an image is cut or gouged from a sheet of linoleum, which is softer and easier to carve than wood. The surface is then inked, paper is laid on top and printing is accomplished by running it through her printing press.

Rhythm and Blues
"It is part of a series of three prints titled 'Reimagine,' which I created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the John Lennon song Imagine."

Te Toanga Manawa
I have called Tūrangi my home for the past year and a half, after growing up in Taupō for 22 years. I had an immediate sense of coming home when moving here, a feeling of connection and love I hadn’t quite felt before. This is the inspiration for how this piece came to life: a visual representation of how I see and feel about living here with new and extended whānau."
Nicky Watts
Nicky, a relatively new resident of Tūrangi, finds inspiration in the vibrant colours of nature and the intricate symbolic patterns of Te Ao Māori. She creates spirited, abstract acrylic pieces of nature and scenery abundant with fine-line details and subtle elements. "As far back as I can remember, I've always loved painting and energetic colours. But since becoming a māmā just over a year ago, space has been created for me to dive into my creativity flow and see where it leads."

"Waipakihi is a special place. It is a place of energy, flowing water, vibrant wildlife, and abundant greenery. It is also a place of campfires, cold swims, and stargazing. This piece is inspired by my time spent camping and exploring near the Waipakihi River."

Magic
"It is a free-flowing creation, allowing me to play around and explore watercolours again, as that was my original preferred media. Expressing my love and connection to the unseen world of vibration."

But since becoming a māmā just over a year ago, space has been created for me to dive into my creativity flow and see where it leads. In my pen artwork, I use a variety of paint pens and inks that give me those lovely, vibrant, and bold colours. This can be a delicate procedure as I work on small areas, wait for the ink to dry, and move on to the next. In some instances, I don't have the perfect ink colour I'm looking for, like in 'Te Toanga Manawa', I hand painted all the swirls in the waters and rivers; this took true dedication and patience.
