Independent Chair Opportunity

Help shape the future of community healthcare in Tūrangi and the Southern Lakes.

Pihanga Health is a not-for-profit, community-focused primary healthcare provider serving Tūrangi and the Southern Lakes communities. We are committed to delivering high-quality, accessible and sustainable healthcare that responds to the needs of the people and whānau we serve.

We are seeking expressions of interest from an experienced governance professional to join the Pihanga Health Board as Independent Chair.

This is an opportunity to provide strong, independent leadership to the Board and help guide the strategic direction of an organisation committed to improving health outcomes and strengthening primary healthcare within our communities.

About the Role

As Independent Chair, you will provide leadership to the Board, support effective governance and help ensure Pihanga Health remains strategically focused, financially sustainable and responsive to the communities it serves.

You will work closely with fellow Board members and management to support sound decision-making, effective oversight and constructive discussion, while maintaining an appropriate distinction between governance and operational management.

What We Are Looking For

We are seeking an Independent Chair who brings:

  • Proven Board and governance leadership experience

  • The ability to lead an effective, constructive and high-performing Board

  • Strong strategic thinking, sound judgement and decision-making capability

  • Confidence in providing independent oversight and constructive challenge

  • The ability to build strong relationships with Board members, management and key stakeholders

  • High standards of integrity, professionalism and accountability

  • An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the importance of culturally responsive healthcare

  • A genuine commitment to improving health outcomes for the communities Pihanga Health serves

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be particularly valuable:

  • Health or primary healthcare

  • Governance and organisational leadership

  • Business and commercial strategy

  • Finance, audit or risk

  • Legal or regulatory matters

  • Community or not-for-profit organisations

  • Knowledge of Tūrangi, the Southern Lakes and the communities Pihanga Health serves

Why Join Pihanga Health?

The Independent Chair plays an important role in supporting the long-term direction, sustainability and effectiveness of Pihanga Health.

Your governance experience and leadership will help strengthen Board performance, support robust decision-making and contribute to the continued delivery of high-quality, accessible healthcare for Tūrangi and the Southern Lakes communities.

GP Locum from NZ or Overseas

From 6 months and up to a year. Between 0.6–1.0 FTE available.

Are you a registered General Practitioner in New Zealand — or an overseas-trained GP interested in working in one of New Zealand’s most scenic and active regions?

We’re currently looking for a GP to join our friendly team and provide maternity leave cover. This is a great opportunity to enjoy rewarding, varied general practice while experiencing everything our region has to offer.

For overseas applicants, Pihanga Health is an accredited employer and we are happy to support suitable candidates through the immigration and employment process.

If you’re already based in Aotearoa New Zealand, we’d love to hear from you if you’re looking for a refreshing change, a short-term opportunity, or the chance to experience working within our community.

To apply, please send your CV and cover letter to manager@pihanga.co.nz. For a confidential discussion about the position, you’re also welcome to call us on 07 384 7576.

General Practitioner or Nurse Practitioner

Permanent Position or Flexible Contract. Between 0.6–1.0 FTE.

Are you a registered General Practitioner or Nurse Practitioner in New Zealand looking for a rewarding role in the beautiful Great Lake region of the central North Island?

We’re seeking an experienced clinician to join our progressive, supportive and highly collaborative team. Our practice offers the opportunity to enjoy the variety and professional satisfaction of rural healthcare, while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

With a low GP/NP-to-patient ratio, you’ll have the time and support to provide high-quality, patient-centred care, including for people with complex health needs.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys working as part of a multidisciplinary team, is adaptable and confident in a busy clinical environment, and is committed to supporting and mentoring others. As an active teaching practice, we place a strong emphasis on learning, professional development and sharing knowledge across the team.

The work is varied and rewarding. You’ll be involved in acute care, routine general practice, complex and long-term condition management, whānau-centred care, community-based healthcare and preventative health and wellbeing. Importantly, there are no on-call, night or weekend requirements, allowing you to make the most of everything our region has to offer outside of work.

You’ll have responsibility for your own group of patients while working closely with our experienced multidisciplinary team. We have a strong focus on quality, innovation and continuous learning, and we encourage team members to develop areas of special interest and become subject-matter experts within the practice.

Te Reo Māori capability would be highly valued, as would an interest in living at the southern end of Lake Taupō. Commuting from Taupō or surrounding communities is also an option, with opportunities for carpooling. Fellowship, or progress towards Fellowship, would be an advantage.

We offer a competitive salary package, including KiwiSaver contributions, assistance with registration fees, medical indemnity cover and practising certificate costs.

If you’re passionate about making a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and whānau and are looking for a fulfilling role within a supportive and forward-thinking practice, we’d love to hear from you.

Please send your CV and cover letter to manager@pihanga.co.nz. For a confidential discussion about the role, you’re also welcome to call 07 384 7576.
