Medical Education

Pihanga Health is a rural teaching practice committed to helping prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Learning in a rural practice

Students can gain experience in:

  • General practice

  • Rural and remote healthcare

  • Acute and ongoing care

  • Preventative medicine

  • Multidisciplinary teamwork

  • Communication with patients and whānau

  • The social and cultural context of health

  • The broad range of skills required in rural medicine

Pihanga Health currently contributes to the training of medical students in their fourth, fifth or final year. Students work under the supervision of the practice’s doctors or nursing team.

Supervision and patient choice

Students are supervised and are not a substitute for the clinician responsible for your care.

You should be told when a student will be involved. You may ask to see your clinician without a student, and your decision will not affect the care you receive.

Developing the rural workforce

Giving students meaningful rural experience can help them understand the rewards, challenges and professional opportunities of rural healthcare. Pihanga Health also supports a culture of mentoring, continuing education and shared learning across its team.
